How to style a couch with cushions

How to style a couch with cushions

For the dog mum who wants a nice-looking couch that still works with real dog life.

Cushions are an easy way to refresh your living room without the expense of buying new furniture.

But when you have dogs, they need to do more than look good. They need to handle fur, paws, chewing, head resting, nesting, being kicked onto the floor and the fact your dog will absolutely claim the couch as theirs.

At Rieko’s World, every cushion design starts with real dog mum life: washable covers, durable fabric, funny quotes, colour and homes where your dog is part of the furniture.

So here’s my simple dog mum roadmap: use odd numbers, choose practical cushions, mix colour with neutrals, change covers when you want a refresh, and stop worrying about the dog’s favourite spot.

1. Use odd numbers and add colour

I like odd numbers because they make the sofa feel styled, but not too perfect.

If the rest of the room is fairly neutral, cushions are one of the easiest ways to add warmth, colour and personality without changing the whole space.

A few easy ways to do it:

  1. One neutral cushion with two colour pops if you want it to feel balanced, but still fun.
  2. Three colour pops if, like me, you love colour and want the sofa to do the heavy lifting in the room.
  3. Two cushions on one side and three on the other if you want it to feel relaxed and lived-in, not like a show home no one is allowed to sit on. This works really well for larger couches.

Simple and easy.

2. Choose practical cushions, not just pretty ones

In a dog home, cushions need to survive actual dog life.  Rieko will chew anything furry, so fluffy edges are out in this home.

Rieko also loves resting his head on cushions and sometimes kicks them off the couch while doing his little nesting routine pawing and scratching at the spot to make it comfy.

So for me, cushions need to be durable, practical and easy to freshen up. That is why our covers are made for real dog homes and can be gentle machine washed in cold water when needed.

For our household, pretty matters, but practical matters more.

3. Do not overthink the dog hair

With a shedder, hair is going to happen. I used to worry about picking colours that would hide Rieko’s fur, but now I focus more on whether the covers can be shaken, vacuumed, wiped or gentle machine washed when they need a freshen up.

4. Change the covers for a quick refresh

I usually change my cushion covers every two to three months, to give the room a new look without changing the sofa or buying anything major.

That is why cushion covers are so good in dog homes, they are easy to swap, easy to freshen up and much less precious than fixed decor.

5. Do not fight the dog’s spot

I don't overthink if a cushion is on Rieko’s favourite spot because he'll lay there regardless. The reality of dog mum life.

If he rests his head on a cushion or kicks one off, so be it because the couch will still look cute.

The simple dog mum couch formula

  1. Use odd numbers.
  2. Choose durable cushions.
  3. Avoid anything your dog will chew.
  4. Mix neutrals with colour pops.
  5. Choose covers you can shake, vacuum, wipe or gentle machine wash.
  6. Change your covers every few months.
  7. Do not stress too much about the dog’s favourite spot.

That is enough to make your couch feel cosy, practical and still your vibe.

Because your dog is probably going to sit there anyway.  You may as well make it look good.
