For the dog mum who loves her dog, but is tired of the couch being covered in fur.
Dog hair on the sofa is part of dog mum life, especially when your dog thinks the best seat in the house belongs to them.
Hi, I’m Becs, founder of Rieko’s World and dog mum to Rieko, a professional shedder, sofa thief and full-time ball addict.
I know dog mums are not looking for perfect show-home decor.
They want a home that feels clean, cosy and easy to live in, but still celebrates the dog who runs the place.
So here’s my simple dog mum roadmap: keep the dog cleaner, stop hair building up, use washable layers, choose sofa fabrics that work with dog life, and keep the cleaning tools where you actually use them.
1. Start with the dog, not the couch
This is one of the biggest things I do with Rieko.
I wash him, brush him and change his blankets regularly. He is a shedder, so brushing does not magically stop the hair, but it does help keep some of it from ending up all over the sofa.
I use the DIY dog wash when he needs a proper clean, especially if he has been rolling around, swimming or living his best muddy life.
Because sometimes getting dog hair off the couch starts before the dog even gets on the couch.
Cleaner dog = Cleaner blankets = Less hair build-up on the sofa.
Not perfect, but definitely better.
2. Use blankets and towels where your dog actually lies
I try to put blankets or towels over the sofa areas Rieko uses most, using washable layers on top to stop the fur building up too much. I do the same with his beds where I can as his beds are too big for my washing machine.
The blanket and towel layers are easy to pick up, shake outside and wash regularly.
It is much easier to shake out or wash a blanket than wrestle a giant dog bed into the machine and hope for the best.
3. Vacuum and wash the sofa covers
My sofa has washable covers, which honestly makes life so much easier with a dog.
I vacuum the covers regularly and then wash them every few months when they need a proper refresh.
This is why I always think dog homes need things that can handle real life. Fur and muddy paws happen.
Dogs claim the sofa as if they personally paid for it.
Washable covers make the whole thing feel less stressful.
4. Choose sofa fabric that works with dog hair
My sofa is a faux suede material, which has actually been really practical, because it is smoother, the hair is easier to wipe off or lift with a lint roller.
If Rieko gets a bit muddy, it is also easier to wipe than a fluffy or velvet-style fabric.
I love beautiful home decor, but with dogs, I always think about how something will actually live in the home.
A sofa can still look lovely, but it needs to work with fur, paws and a dog who believes every soft surface belongs to him.
5. Keep the lint roller where you actually need it
If the lint roller is hidden somewhere random, I will not use it, so I keep mine in the living room cupboard. I shipped mine from London, UK (not sure why lol).
That way, when the sofa needs a quick tidy, it is easy to grab.
A lint roller, a quick vacuum and a shake of the blankets can make the couch feel instantly fresher. Not deep-cleaned, not perfect but fresh enough that you can sit down without becoming part dog.
6. Style the sofa so it still feels like you
This is where cushions make such a difference.
My cushions are placed on the sofa because I still want the room to feel styled, cosy and colourful, even with dog hair and real life happening around them.
The good thing is, Rieko’s World cushion covers are made for real dog homes.
They are durable, removable and washable, so they can handle everyday life better than decor that is too precious.
A funny dog mum cushion, breed cushion or colourful cushion cover can make the couch feel pulled together, even if your dog has been living their best life on it all day.
It says, “Yes, my dog lives here.” But in a cute way.
The simple dog hair couch formula
- Brush the dog.
- Wash the blankets.
- Shake out the sofa layers.
- Vacuum the covers.
- Keep the lint roller close.
- Choose washable, durable cushions.
- Pick fabrics that make dog hair easier to remove.
- That is enough to make your couch feel cleaner, calmer and easier to live with.
Because your dog is probably going to get back on the couch anyway.
You may as well make it look good.
