For the dog mum who wants a clean, cosy home… even when the dog owns the couch.
You just need your home to work with real life: fur, toys, throws, baskets, muddy paws and one very opinionated dog who has claimed the best seat in the house.
After creating 200+ dog mum cushions and chatting to hundreds of dog mums at markets, I know this for sure
Dog mums are not trying to create perfect show homes.
We are just trying to keep the hair at bay, make the house feel cosy, and celebrate the furry little legends who make it home.
So, here’s my simple dog mum roadmap: bring in fresh air, use washable layers, keep muddy toys at the door, reset the sofa before bed, and rely on a few cheeky shortcuts to keep the house feeling clean between proper cleans.
1. Start the day with light and fresh air
This is the first thing I do in the morning.
I open the front and back door to let fresh air move through the house and open all the curtains.
It sounds simple, but it instantly makes the home feel fresher, especially when you live with a dog who loves the sofa, the rugs and every soft surface available.
Before I even think about cleaning, I let the house breathe.
It is a small habit, but it makes a big difference.
2. Choose rugs you can actually wash
Rieko loves lying on rugs, so I have learned not to buy rugs that are too precious.
Every few days, I carefully pick them up and shake them out the back.
The amount of hidden fur that comes out is honestly impressive.
And slightly horrifying.
I also only buy rugs I can put in the washing machine, because dog homes need things that can handle real life.
Pretty is lovely. Washable is better.
3. Keep the yucky toys outside
Rieko is ball obsessed, so this one has been very necessary in our house.
He is allowed to bring his clean rubber balls inside, but if it is one of his outside balls, the simple trained command is: “Outside Ball”
He knows to drop the yucky ball at the entrance, then he can come inside. He's a smart cookie.
It took a little training, but it has saved my floors, rugs and sofa from so much dirt.
Because sometimes controlling dog hair and mess is not just about cleaning more.
It is about creating little house rules that make dog life easier to live with.
The dog still gets to be a dog and the muddy ball just does not get to join us on the couch.
4. Use blankets where your dog actually rests or sleeps
I have a blanket on the sofa where Rieko mainly chills.
Although, to be fair, he lies wherever he chooses because apparently he owns the house.
But his blanket is on his favourite spot, so most of the fur collects there instead of directly on the sofa.
It is easier to wash one blanket than clean the whole couch every day.
This is the kind of dog mum styling I love: practical, cosy and still nice to look at.
That is why washable cushion covers work so well too.
They soften the room, add personality and make the sofa feel styled, even if your dog has already claimed it.
A funny dog mum cushion, breed cushion or breed print adds warmth without adding clutter.
It says, “Yes, my dog runs this house.” But in a cute way.
5. Reset the sofa before bed
Before bed, I like to reset the sofa. I straighten the throw, position the cushions and make the room feel calm again.
It means I wake up to a lounge that feels cosy instead of chaotic.
This is also where cushions make such a difference.
I love colour, so even though my room has grey curtains, I use the sofa to bring in warmth, personality and fun.
A funny dog mum cushion, breed cushion or colourful cushion cover can make the room feel styled, even when the dog has been living his best life on it all day.
This is what Rieko’s World is designed for: real dog homes full of fur, love, colour, chaos and comfort.
Not perfect homes. Real ones.
6. Do the cheeky skirting board trick
This is my secret squirrel tip.
If I do not have time for a proper deep clean, I run my foot along the skirting board to collect the tumbleweed dog hair.
Is it glamorous? No.
Does it work when you are short on time? Absolutely.
Dog hair loves hiding along the edges of the room, so even a quick sweep with your foot can make the space feel cleaner fast.
Sometimes the little shortcuts are what keep the house feeling manageable.
This is what Rieko’s World is designed for: real dog homes full of fur, chaos, comfort and love.
The goal is not to hide that a dog lives there. The goal is to make it look beautiful.
The simple dog mum home formula
- Open the doors.
- Let the light in.
- Shake out the rugs.
- Train your dog to keep the yucky toys outside.
- Use washable blankets where your dog actually sleeps.
- Be a little cheeky inbetween cleans
- Reset the sofa before bed.
- Add colour, cushions and personality so the room still feels like you.
That is my simple dog mum reset.
That is enough to make a dog home feel cleaner, calmer and still like you.
Because the goal is not to hide the fact that a dog lives there.
The goal is to create a home that works beautifully with dog life.
Fur, blankets, couch stealing and all.
